The spin-orbit-induced magnetic anisotropy of the impurities in a nonmagnetic host is studied for mesoscopic wires with a rectangular cross-section taking into account roughness of their surfaces. A competition among the perpendicular to each other surfaces, which influences the impurity-spin state, results in a rather intricate co-ordinate dependence of the magnetic anisotropy energy as compared with the case of a semi-infinite host considered in [1]. Roughness of the surfaces enhances the splitting of the impurity-spin energy level. The calculated inhomogeneous probability for the electron scattering by the magnetic impurities is implicated to interpret the observed shape-dependent behavior of resistivity and thermopower in mesoscopic wires of dilute FexAu1−x alloys [2]. This work is supported by FWO-V, WOG and BOF NOI 97 (Belgium).
