The electronic structure of cuprates in one and two dimensions. — •Mark S. Golden — Institut f"ur Festkorper- und Werkstofforschung (IFW) Dresden, Postfach 270016, D-01171 Dresden

This talk gives an overview of the state of the field regarding the experimental study of the electronic structure of cuprate systems using high energy spectroscopic methods. Spectroscopies such as photoemission (core level and angle-resolved valence band), electron energy loss (EELS) in transmission and polarisation dependent x-ray absorption (XAS) have been used to study the nature and dynamics of both single holes and electron-hole pairs in single crystalline cuprates. Through appropriate combination of the characteristic square CuO4 plaquettes, these single crystals contain Cu-O networks which represent 1, 2 and intermediate (1-2) dimensional electron systems in the forms of chains, planes and ladders. The data will also be discussed in the light of the lively debate currently going on regarding the breakdown of the Fermi liquid picture in one and two dimensional cuprates.
