Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering Off Helium-3 — •C. Villagonzalo and M. Schreiber — Institut für Physik, Technische Universität Chemnitz, D-09107 Chemnitz
Information regarding the momentum distribution of liquid helium, such as the dynamic structure factor or the Compton profile, is directly obtained from deep inelastic neutron scattering (DINS) experiments through the impulse approximation. In the momentum distribution measurements for (fermionic) liquid 3He there is still no satisfactory explanation of the ’final state effects’ (FSE). These effects are due to the interaction of the neutron-probed helium atom with the other atoms in the liquid. An attempt has been done in this work to incorporate these effects by using the hard sphere model for 3He and considering Pauli blocking as a final state correction. This model treats the interaction of the probed helium atom with another helium atom in the medium as an elastic collision between hard spheres. Pauli blocking takes into account Pauli’s exclusion principle in this interaction. We have found that the hard sphere model provides a good starting point to study FSE. But Pauli blocking does not alter significantly the impluse approximated Compton profile. The reason for the discrepancy between theory and experiment in fermionic 3He case must be sought elsewhere.
