A systematic study of magnetic moments of the first excited 2+ and 4+ states of the fp-shell nuclei 46,48Ti and 50Cr revealed interesting features of particle configurations and interactions determining the structure of these nuclei. In the measurements Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics was combined with the technique of transient magnetic fields [1]. Ion beams of 110 MeV of Ti and 120 MeV of Cr isotopes, provided by the tandem accelerators at Cologne and Munich, were Coulomb excited in collisions with a carbon target. A Gd layer served as host for spin precession of the excited states. The γ-rays were measured with BaF2 scintillators in coincidence with the forward recoiling carbon ions. This technique allowed to determine the g-factors with high accuracy due to the large particle detection efficiency. The g-factors obtained are attributed to particle configurations (f7/2)n and (f7/2)n−1 (p3/2, f5/2, p1/2)1 which manifest for the first time the precise shell model structure of these nuclei[2]. The new data contradict earlier measurements[3].
