Experiments with thin(mg/cm2) and thick (typically several cm in thickness and diameter) targets have been carried out at the proton accelerator COSY(Jülich) with incident proton energies from 0.4 to 2.5 GeV in order to study fundamental spallation reactions using neutron and charged particle detectors[1]. A variety of target materials—Hg (presently most favoured for ESS), W and Pb (provided as reflector material), different target geometries and beam energies have been investigated serving as an important benchmark for optaining key parameters neccessary to design the European Spallation Source(ESS)[2]. Typical observables of interest are

The aim of our experimental program is the eventwise measurement of all emitted reaction products for thin targets and of neutrons for thick targets providing a means to validate codes describing intra- and inter-nuclear processes, respectively. The comparison of experimental data with the results of the high energy transport code HERMES[3] will be shown.
