Procedure of K+-identification at ANKE — •H. Junghans — Institut für Kernphysik, Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52425 Jülich

First experiments at the spectrometer ANKE, which has recently been installed in the COSY-accelerator ring, investigated the subthreshold production of K+-mesons in proton-carbon collisions at projectile energies below the free NN threshold. The subthreshold K+ production is a rare process which occurs in the presence of an up to 106 times more intense background of protons and pions. Therefore a rapid data acquisition system which allows to store data with a speed of 2 MByte/s and a very efficient data analysis based on Linux-PCs have been developed.
The suppression of the background is achieved in two steps: first the time and amplitude information of the scintillation detectors is used for a rough separation between kaons and background stemming from the target. In the second step the position information of the multiwire proportional chambers is applied to reject the particles which do not originate from the target and to determine the momentum of the ejectiles stemming from the target.
