In a series of experiments with 158 A GeV ²⁰⁸Pb beams from the CERN SPS, inclusive measurements have been carried out. Cross sections for single and multiple neutron removal, single proton removal, nuclear charge changing, and total interaction cross sections have been measured in targets ranging from carbon to lead. For ultrarelativistic collisions with low-Z targets hadronic processes play an important role, whereas in high-Z targets electromagnetic dissociation completely dominates the cross sections. Due to the different dependences on the charge Z of the target nuclei the two contributions can be disentangled. Good agreement with semiclassical calculations is observed.
