The atomic beam source (ABS) is under construction for experiments at the spectrometer ANKE at the storage ring COSY. The ABS will inject polarized H or D atoms into the gas-storage cell target. The atomic beam from the dissociator with the cooled nozzle is available from the beginning of 1999. The hydrogen or deuterium molecules are dissociated to neutral atoms by the rf-resonator. The maximum value of the degree of dissociation, i.e. fraction of H or D atoms in the beam, can be achieved by appropriate choice of rf power, gas throughput, temperature and geometrical parameters of the nozzle. The measuring technique of the degree of dissociation utilizing a cross beam quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) and a beam chopper to improve signal-to-noise ratio are described. An xyz-table for the QMS provides a possibility to investigate the beam profile and to measure the degree of dissociation across the beam. First results will be presented.
