The atomic beam source (ABS) is under construction for experiments at the spectrometer ANKE at the COSY storage ring. The ABS will inject polarized H or D atoms into the target storage cell. The achievable gas-target thickness depends on the intensity inj ected into the feeding tube of the cell. This intensity has to be maximized and its absolute value has to be determined. Maximization is provided by ABS parameters like nozzle temperature, skimmer-nozzle geometry, position of the magnets. The first dissociated beam and sextupole magnets will be available from beginning of 1999. The compression tube technique allows to precisely calibrate the atomic beam intensity. Axial movement of the compression tube is used to find the focus of the magnets while by la teral movement the beam profile is scanned. The compression tube will be used also to check the operation of the rf-transition unit. First results will be presented.
