Direct mass measurements of exotic nuclei with lifetimes down to a few µs can be performed at the Experimental Storage Ring ESR at GSI by means of Isochronous Mass Spectrometry. For this purpose an isochronous ion-optical setting of the lattice has been developed and successfully tested at the ESR. It is characterized by a transition point as low as γt ≈ 1.37 (in comparison to 2.5 for the standard mode of operation) and therefore allows to inject and to store heavy ions fulfilling the isochronicity condition γ=γt. Hence the revolution frequency is a measure for their mass. Results of first experiments with projectile fragments produced from neon and nickel primary beams at the Fragment Separator FRS will be presented. A mass resolution of the order of mm=100.000 has been achieved. An outlook to future experiments will be given.
