We consider various approaches to solve the many-body problem of correlated fermion systems. These include the hole-line expansion, the coupled cluster or exp[S] approach, BCS approximation and the LANCZOS technique for an exact diagonalisation. These techniques are applied to problems of nuclear physics (nuclear matter, finite nuclei, shell-model with pairing hamiltonian) as well as solid state physics (Hubbard model) to explore the advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches and study their reliability for the various systems. As examples for the observables we typically consider groundstate properties like binding energy, radii of finite systems, occupation probabilities for mean field states, one- and two-body spectral functions as well as Charge-Charge and Spin-Spin correlations.
