Accurate calculations of transition probabilities and lifetimes for applications in laser and astro physics — •C. Z. Dong, S. Fritzsche, and B. Fricke — Fachbereich Physik, Universit"at Kassel, D–34109 Kassel.
Investigations in laser and astro physics often rely on accurate atomic transition data. For multiple and highly charged ions these information are difficult to obtain experimentally and, therefore, detailed calculations are required. Though many strong resonance lines are now well understood for most elements, the accurate calculation of weak or even forbidden transitions has remained as a challenge for present–day atomic structure theory. In astro physics, however, these weak lines often play a significant role in determining electron densities, temperatures, and other quantities for stellar and interstellar plasmas.
This contribution reports about systematic multiconfiguration Dirac–Fock calculations for selected elements along the chlorine and nickel isoelectronic sequences. Recently, the resonance and forbidden transitions from the latter sequence have been analyzed in the context of laser amplification [1,2] in the x–ray regime. In contrast to most previous studies along these sequences, our ab–initio computations include the effects of correlation, relativity, and density relaxation within the same theoretical framework.
