Ionisation and excitation of helium in relativistic heavy-ion collisions — •I. Barna, C. Pfeiffer, N. Grün, and W. Scheid — Institut für Theoretische Physik der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen
Coupled channel calculations are presented for the scattering of heavy ions on helium atoms. First the eigenvalue problem of helium is solved in a Slater-type basis of s, p and d functions. The projectile is considered as a classical point charge, that passes the target on a straight line. The ion-atom interaction arises from the time-retarded Liénard-Wiechert Coulomb potentials. Calculations were made for Ne10+ , Kr36+ and H+ on helium. The calculated single ionisation cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data. Further extensions of our method are in progress. Coulomb wave packets will be added to the Slater-type functions to get a better description of the continuum states, especially of those that describe double ionisation.
