Very high resolution spectroscopy of high Rydberg states — •F. Merkt — Laboratorium f"ur Physikalische Chemie, ETH Z"urich, CH-8092 Z"urich, Switzerland
A new method has been developed to record spectra of high Rydberg states at very high resolution ( up to 60 KHz). A broadly tunable ultraviolet laser (tunable range 60-130nm, bandwidth 0.01meV) is used to transfer population from the ground neutral state of atoms and molecules to a selected Rydberg state with a principle quantum number n in the range of n=50-130. Millimeter waves are then used to record spectra of transitions from this selected state to higher Rydberg states at very high resolution. This new method enables the derivation of new information on high atomic and molecular Rydberg states. It also enables very precise measurements of electric fields and their compensation to levels below 2mV/m.
