Offshore Wind in Denmark – Potential, and Technical Issues — •Sten Frandsen — Riso National Laboratory, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark
Onshore, there are approx. 4000 wind turbines in Denmark. The rated power of these older machines is typically low, 50-200 kW, and the total contribution to the national electric power supply is only 8-9 per cent. Wind turbines can be seen from more or less any location in the country – finding new onshore sites for wind turbines is becoming a problem, mostly due to landscape preservation and other environmental regulations.
Another motivation for moving offshore it that wind resources are considerably better. With 40-50 per cent higher higher construction costs, offshore wind farms are expected to be cost effective.
Also, the national energy planning aims at a wind energy penetration of 50 GW of offshore wind farm installations.
The presentation includes the following: Existing pilot offshore projects and experiences – Offshore wind climate: energy potential, extremes, ambient and wind farm turbulence – Total and practical potential – Immediate plant and site selection criteria – New wind turbine concepts for offshore
