The viewpoint of the Global Critical Point Theory (using for instance Lusternik-Schnirelman Theory or Morse Theory) allows to face the study of multiplicity problems for light rays and timelike curves in Lorentzian geometry. A typical application is a mathematical description of the gravitational lens effect.
