In recent years, the fabrication and the physical characterization of photonic crystals have revealed extraordinary optical properties. The theoretical studies presented accompany IR measurements of macroporous photonic band gap material [1] (e.g. Si, a ≈ 1µm) being electro-chemically prepared. The approaches implemented are based on Maxwell’s equations, solved by plane wave expansions. Triangular єs/єb-lattices of air columns are described for TM- and TE- polarisation. In the contribution, possible existence and energetic position of band gaps have been studied for varying lattice filling factors given by r/a. It is shown that the complete photonic band gap for circular air holes varies characteristically in the experimentally relevant r/a region.
Exceeding shapes of є-distributions already studied, analytical solutions for elliptical holes/rods are numerically implemented and analysed. The authors discuss the influence of the eccentricity of air columns to the band structure for different k-directions of the Brillouin zone.
