On the Optimum Beam Energy of Neutral Beam Current Drive in Tokamaks — •E. Speth, W. Ott, and A. Staebler — Max Planck Institut fuer Plasmaphysik 85748 Garching Germany Euratom Association
The optimum beam energy for neutral beam current drive (NBCD) in Tokamaks is re-examined. As it is true for any optimisation, the result depends on the constraints, i.e. the additional conditions, under which the optimisation is being carried out. In this paper the idealised case of a so called NBCD devoted Tokamak is discussed. In the conventional optimisation the four experimental parameters electron temperature, electron density, heating power and beam energy are considered as independent variables. However, in an NBCD devoted Tokamak there are two additional relations between those four variables. Those additional conditions are the power balance and the shine through limit. Hence, there are two of the four parameters only, which can be chosen freely. This has to be taken into account in the optimisation of the current drive efficiency with respect to beam energy. As a result the optimum beam energy is typically a factor 3 lower compared to the conventional optimisation.
