Saturation of SBS reflectivity in multimode fiber phase conjugators by reduction of interaction length — •Q. Zhu, Hans-Joachim Eichler, and Baining Liu — Optisches Institut, Technische Universit"at Berlin, Str. des 17. Juni 135, D-10623 Berlin, Germany

The reflectivity of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in multimode all silica step-index fibers saturates at about 0.6 in experiments. To explain the limited acoustic grating reflectivity, the effective interaction length (Leff) has been determined. Higher pump powers build up SBS earlier and the backward stimulated scattering is excited along shorter fiber length. Multimode fibers with different core diameters were investigated with a Nd:YAG oscillator amplifier system at 1064 nm wavelength with 30 ns pulses. Using the values of determined Leff and the two waves mixing description of the SBS process, the reflectivity of

SBS is calculated, which agrees with experimental results.
