A Novel Scheme for the Detection of a Single Atom — •Torsten Bondo, Markus Hennrich, Axel Kuhn, and G. Rempe — Fakultät für Physik der Universität Konstanz, Fach M701, D-78457 Konstanz
Two methods for the optical detection of a single atom will be presented. The first method is based on laser induced fluorescence and a nearly 4π-collection of the emitted photons using a pair of spherical and elliptical mirrors. The second scheme is based on Cavity QED and represents a novelty. It employs the stimulated emission of photons into a single mode of a high finesse optical cavity. Correlation measurements between the two detectors are planned, using single cold atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap. The photons emitted into the optical cavity are to be correlated with the subsequently emitted fluorescence photons generated by the same atom in a spatially separated detection region. The stabilization of the optical cavity, the detection system as well as other features concerning the experimental setup will be presented.
