Spontaneous Emission in Photonic Crystals — •Kurt Busch1, Nipun Vats1, Sajeev John1, and Barry C. Sanders21Department of Physics, University of Toronto, Canada — 2Department of Physics, MacQuarie University, Sydney, Australia

A theory of spontaneous emission of active atoms and molecules embedded in Photonic Crystals is presented. It is based on the natural modes of the crystal, i.e., the Bloch modes, for which the relevant coupling constants are derived. Using model dispersion relations and corresponding coupling constants, the theory reproduces all the results obtained in previous works. In addition, more realistic calculations for the spontaneous emission of active atoms and molecules in Photonic Crystals are presented. Rather than using model dispersion relations, these calculations utilize dispersion relations and coupling constants from realistic bandstructure computations. The theory may be extended to treat resonance fluorescence as well as cooperative phenomena and may thus serve as a reliable guide to realizing experiments and provide new insight for quantum optics in Photonic Crystals.
