Highly Exciting C60 — •G. von Helden1,2, B. Sartakov3, D. van Heijnsbergen1,2, I. Holleman1, and G. Gas phase C60 is resonantly excited using picosecond infrared (IR) pulses from a free electron laser [1]. The excitation can be very high, reaching levels where the thermal emission of electrons from C60 is observed. The excitation is much more efficient when the macropulse of the IR radiation is chirped to lower frequencies. The excitation process is modeled and the results can be compared to the experiment.
