Quantum information and communication — •Ignacio Cirac — Institut für Theoretische Physik,Universität Innsbruck,Technikerstrasse 25,A-6020 Innsbruck, Austria

I will discuss the problem of sending quantum information between two nodes of a quantum network in the presence of noise. I will first show how one can use teleportation and purification protocols to overcome the problems originated by noise. Then, I will analyze these protocols and obtain that the number of resources needed to accomplish this task scale exponentially with the distance. I will present a method called "nested purification protocols" for which the resources scale polynomically with the distance and that work in the presence of noise at the percent level (that is, when the probability of having an error during purification and teleportation is of the order of 0.01).
