F2c from D∗ +→ (D0 → K− π+) π+ (+c.c.) with the Zeus Detector at Hera — •I. Redondo — DESY, Notkestrasse 85, 22607 Hamburg
D∗ production cross sections in DIS are measurered in HERA interactions with the ZEUS detector. The D∗’s are tagged using the decay channal D∗ +→ (D0 → K− π+) π+ (+c.c.). The 1996 and 1997 runs are analyzed. They amount to a total luminosity of 36 pb−1. The integrated cross section as well as differential cross sections in Q2, W, xBJ, pt(D∗ ), η(D∗ ) and x(D∗ ) in the restricted kinematical region 1<Q2<600, 0.02<y<0.7, 1.5<pt(D∗ )<15 and ∣η(D∗ )∣<1.5 are presented. The effect of hadronization in the two latter differential cross sections are discussed. With the help of the NLO QCD program for charm production HVQDIS, the cross section in Q2, y bins are extrapolated to the whole kinematical region in pt(D∗ ) and η(D∗ ) in order to extract the charm structure function of the proton, F2c. This observable is closely related in HERA to the gluon distribution function in the proton due to the dominance of the Photon Gluon Fusion diagram. The F2c data points are compared with predictions from a NLO QCD calculation using different parton distribution sets as input.
