Hard exclusive electroproduction of two or more pions is a process for which a systematic QCD description (factorization) is possible. One of the nonperturbative ingredients in the production amplitude is the light-cone distribution amplitude of the produced many pion state. We study in detail the properties of these generalized distribution amplitudes. This includes general properties following from chiral symmetry and dispersion relations, as well as quantitative estimates from model calculations based on the instanton vacuum.
