Results of recent field and laboratory studies which were conducted with a novel method for measurements of peroxy radicals will be presented. The main characteristics of this method developed at our laboratory are chemical conversion and amplification of peroxy radicals to sulfuric acid and detection of sulfuric acid by ion molecule reaction mass spectrometry (IMRMS). One part of the studies aimed at the calibration of the instrument and diagnostics of interference, loss processes and conversion efficiency. Further laboratory work focused on the discrimination between organic peroxy radicals and HO2. The objectives are to develop an HO2 -only measuring mode of operation and an improved characterization of the conversion efficiency of organic peroxy radicals to HO2.
