Exciting developments in the field of high performance Brillouin spectroscopy make this technique especially versatile for the mechanical and optical characteristion of polymers. A new scattering technique, the “RITA technique“, allows simultaneously Brillouin microscopy, the determination of refractive indices as a function of space and orientation coordinates and a complete characterisation of the elastic anisotropies. At last, the RITA technique offers now a continuous determination of acoustic dispersion in a wide range of wave vectors. With this new technique the acoustic wave guide properties of nano-scaled polymer films have been investigated down to a thickness of 13 nm. The efficiency of the RITA technique is demonstrated on the base of various examples.
