The advantage of computer controlled electrolytic processes has raised the hope that ultrathin epitaxial films with tailored magnetic properties can be prepared by electrodeposition [1]. Here we report on electrodeposition of Co-films on a Au(111)-surface where the growth process was monitored by scaning tunnel microscope (STM) and magneto optic Kerr-effect (MOKE). The structural and magnetic properties have subsequently been analysed ex-situ by complementary techniques. Deposition of Co was performed on high quality Au(111) films which were vacuum evaporated on mica and then flame annealed. The films were grown in a 3-electrode cell under potentiostatic control from a cobalt sulfate and sulfamate bath. Ex-situ measurements show a change form hcp to fcc structures as an effect of thickness and overpotential during the growth. Due to this effect the magnetization of the electrodeposited ultrathin cobalt films can be tuned continuously from in-plane to out-of-plane. The change in the magnetic anisotropies due to the influence of a magnetic field during the deposition were shown.
