Structure and magnetic properties of exchange biased Fe/MnPd bilayers — •Y.J. Tang, B. Roos, T. Mewes, S.O. Demokritov, and B. Hillebrands — Fachbereich Physik, Universit"at Kaiserslautern, Erwin-Schr"odinger-Str. 56, 67663 Kaiserslautern
Antiferromagnetic MnPd has been used as the pinning layer in the
polycrystalline
exchange bias system Fe/MnPd. Samples of the type
Si/SiO2/Fe(tFe)/MnPd(200Å )/ Pd (20Å )
were produced using UHV evaporation in a magnetic field applied parallel to
the sample
surface. The thickness tFe of the Fe layer was either fixed at
30Å or varied in
a
wedge-shaped geometry between 20Å and 160Å. The structure of the
MnPd layer was
characterized by X-ray analysis. We found the antiferromagnetic fct phase
of MnPd,
leading to a strong exchange bias effect of the bilayer system, without the
necessity
of an annealing step.
Magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements reveal a linearly decreasing
exchange bias field
of 50 Oe to 5 Oe with increasing Fe thickness. The dependence of the
magnetization
curves
as a function of the in-plane angle of the applied field with respect to
the direction of
the growth field was measured. The data is well reproduced by a model fit,
assuminugfoldnly
rotation processes, and anisotropy contributions of unidirecitonal,
uniaxial and forth
order. All three anisotropy contributions show an exchange-bias induced
1/tFe
dependence.
