The c(2×2)Mn/Cu(001) overlayer system is a prototype of a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic alloy. ARUPS measurements and in particular the study of new surface states identified in this system and complementary LEED measurements indicate a strong surface reactivity together with a certain degree of metastability. To rule out this undesired effects we have studied the growth and magnetic properties of this system with a protective layer of Cu on top. Here we present a combined XPS, ARUPS, LEED, Photoelectron diffraction, and NEXAFS study of the c(2×2)Mn/Cu(001), the p(1×1)Cu/c(2×2)Mn/Cu(001), and the c(2×2)Mn/p(1×1)Cu/c(2×2)Mn/Cu(001) superstructure that give insight into the electronic and magnetic properties of these systems.
