Depopulation of majority-spin states near the Co/W(110) interface — •S. Bode, G. Kaindl, and K. Starke — Institut fuer Experimentalphysik, FU Berlin, Arnimallee 14
The Curie temperature TC of a few monolayers (ML) thin Co
films on W(110) drops
rapidly (400 K / ML) with decreasing Co-film thickness d, and
an extrapolation of recent
TC(d) data yields the absence of ferromagnetic order for the
Co monolayer [1]. This
finding is in contrast to the substantial ferromagnetic coupling
strength previously
observed for the Fe monolayer on the same substrate [2].
We report a spin-resolved investigation of the valence-band
structure near the
Co/W(110) interface using spin-polarized inverse photoemission
(IPE). The
sp-like Co(0001) surface state, which resides just below
the Fermi level for
thick Co films, becomes depopulated with decreasing Co-film
thickness. Due to the
stationary energy of this state around the 2-dimensional
Brillouin-zone center, its
depopulation is likely to result in a reduced magnetic moment
near the Co/W(110) interface.
