Energy of 4f-levels in IPE and MO transitions from La-chalcogenides — •F. Huebinger, G. Kaindl, and K. Starke — Inst. f. Experimentalphysik, FU Berlin, Arnimallee 14, D-14195 Berlin-Dahlem
Recent studies of La-chalcogenides gave evidence of
magnetooptical (MO) transitions with large Kerr rotations
even in paramagnetic materials [1,2]. The MO signals were
attributed to an involvement of 4f states being spin-polarized
in external fields. However, for a reliable interpretation an
exact knowledge of the unoccupied 4f-level energies in the
La-chalcogenides is needed.
Using a high-resolution inverse photoemission (IPE) spectrometer
we have investigated the unoccupied energy-level sheme of LaX
single crystals (with X = S, Se). The 4f-level energies do not
coincide with the sharp low-energy features [1], but are close
to broader structures found in an extended MO study [2]. -
We give a detailed comparison of 5d-4f MO transition energies
and 4fn+1-electron addition states probed by IPE.
