We present a new technique for the detection of single molecule
absorption lines using a radio frequency (RF) modulated
electric field applied directly to the sample. RF Stark
modulation of the single molecule lines can be regarded as
a kind of an inverse frequency modulation (FM) experiment in
which the transition dipole of the molecule rather than the
laser light is phase-modulated. The technique is demonstrated
for the systems terrylene in naphthalene and terrylene in
hexadecane. The dependence of the absorption line on the
modulation frequency and the RF electric field amplitude is
measured and described. The signal to noise ratio and possible
applications of the absorption technique will be discussed.
