A statistical approach for interpreting the optical extinction spectra of metal island films — •A.N. Lebedev, O. Stenzel, M. Schreiber, and D.R.T. Zahn — Technische Universität Chemnitz, FB Physik, D-09107 Chemnitz

We present an algorithm for calculating the linear optical response of island films, taking into account the statistical character of the cluster geometry as well as electromagnetic coupling between the clusters. The method involves Monte Carlo simulations of the island film growth as well as aggregate calculations of the island film optical extinction. The calculations have been performed for the special case of silver clusters on a fused silica substrate. The comparison of the calculation with transmission electron micrographs and oblique incidence optical transmission spectra confirms the good agreement between theory and experiment for different degrees of substrate coverage.
