Plume and finger regimes driven by an exothermic interface reaction — •K. Eckert1 and A. Grahn2 — 1Institut f"ur Luft– und Raumfahrttechnik, TU Dresden, 01062 Dresden — 2Institut f"ur Sicherheitsforschung, Forschungszentrum Rossendorf, PF 510 119, 01314 Dresden
We study the pattern formation in a chemical two-layer system, placed in a Hele-Shaw-cell. The upper layer is an organic solvent in which a fatty acid is dissolved. The lower layer consists of water containing an anorganic base. We report on a novel instability type which is driven by an exothermic neutralization reaction in vicinity of the interface. This instability combines plume and salt finger regimes and gives rise to a self-sustained dynamics.
