Electron states are investigated in a periodic one-dimensional infinite and semi-infinite arrays of rectangular quantum wires (with a finite height of the potential barrier). Exact electron wave functions and the energy spectrum are found in an analytical expansion form based on the solutions of the Schrödinger equation for the one-dimensional rectangular quantum well with a finite depth. Electron energy bands are calculated as a function of the sizes of quantum wires and of the period. In the semi-infinite array, electron states are obtained, which decay in space off the array edge. When the period tends to infinity, the calculated energies lead to those obtained in Refs. [1] and [2] for a single quantum wire using, respectively, the finite-difference method and the double Fourier series expansion to solve the Schrödinger equation. The results of the present work comprehensively describe the energy spectra in quantum wires Ga0.47In0.53As/InP, which have been observed at the temperature T=2K and 300K in Refs. [3] and [4], correspondingly. This work has been supported by the COPERNICUS Project No. PL97-8078.
