Lowest Landau Level Theory of the Quantum Hall Effect — •Ferdinand Evers — Institut für Theorie der kondensierten Materie, Universität Karlsruhe
We derive a theory for interacting electrons under FQHE conditions in the lowest Landau level (LLL). First, we project the Hamiltonian onto the LLL and recover a theory similar to the one proposed by Read
[1] valid for bosons at integer filling fraction. Then a Chern-Simons transformation is performed. In previous approaches its purpose has been to partly cancel the external magnetic field. In contrast, we use it to eliminate the leading order term in the interaction. The achievements of the new theory are: 1) the effective mass is solely generated by interaction while the cyclotron frequency is on the bare mass scale, 2) otherwise the RPA-response is similar to the one in the theory by HLR
[2] , 3) quasiparticles at half filling interact via transverse current fluctuations, as in the theories by Shankar
[3] and Haldane
