Organic Solar Cells: Overview and Perspectives — •Donald Lupo — Sony International (Europe) GmbH, Materials Science Laboratories, Stuttgarter Str. 106, 70736 Fellbach, Germany
Organic photovoltaic cells have been investigated for many years, but after an initial flurry of activity public interest decreased for a number of years, partially due to the low efficiencies that were achieved in initial studies. In the last years interest has grown again. This is not only a result of growing interest in renewable energy, but also of substantial progress in improving the efficiency of organic solar cells and of the development of new cell architiectures. An overview will be given on progress in thin film organic solar cells, devices incorporating bicontinuous separated phases of polymers, and dye-sensitised nanocrystalline photoelectrochemical cells. In addition, the development of a solid-state dye-sensitised nanocrystalline heterojunction solar cell incorporating novel amorphous organic hole conductors will be described and recent results on such systems will be presented.
