Organic-Inorganic Heterostructures: Creation of Hybrid Excitations — •P. Reineker1, A. Engelmann1, V. I. Yudson1,2, and V. M. Agranovich21Abteilung Theoretische Physik, Universit"at Ulm, 89069 Ulm — 2Institute of Spectroscopy, Russian Academy of Sciences, 142092 Troitzk, Moscow District, Russia

In recent years intensive investigations were undertaken, both theoretical and experimental, into materials with interesting nonlinear optical properties. One way of getting materials with new nonlinear optical properties is the formation of heterostructures by combining organic and inorganic materials. Upon optically exciting organic materials, Frenkel excitons are formed with small radius and large oscillator strength. In the case of inorganic semiconductors Wannier excitons are created which have a large radius and small oscillator strength. The question arises: what are the excitations in combined organic-inorganic heterostructures? This question is discussed for three different geometries: for two-dimensional quantum wells, for one-dimensional quantum wires and for zero-dimensional quantum dots consisting of an inorganic core covered by a thin organic layer. It is shown that the dipole-dipole interaction between the organic and inorganic materials results in new excited states called hybrid excitons.
