The realization that conventional microelectronics is approaching its miniaturization limits has motivated the search for an alternative approach based on self-assembled nanometer-scale electronics. Considerable efforts have been put in that direction but progress has been impeded by the fact that materials amenable to self-assembly (e.g. organic and biological molecules) display poor electrical characteristics while electronic materials (e.g. metals and semiconductors) are chemically too simple to show self assembly of elaborate structures. In an attempt to overcome that difficulty we have recently proposed (E. Braun, Y. Eichen, U. Sivan and G. Ben Yoseph, Nature, 391, 775-778 (1998)) a new concept based on the hybridization of biological materials with electronic ones. The inherent molecular recognition properties of the biological molecules are first utilized to construct a template for the subsequent assembly of electronic materials into a molecular scale useful circuit. In the talk, the concept will be reviewed and demonstrated through the results of recent experiments. Open conceptual and practical questions related to self-assembly of complex molecular scale electronics will be discussed.
