Single-electron transistor as a local probe for the 2DES — •Jürgen Weis, Yayi Wei, Klaus v. Klitzing, and Karl Eberl — Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung, Heisenbergstr. 1, D-70569 Stuttgart

By using a metal single-electron transistor (SET), which was deposited on top of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure containing a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) 90 nm below the surface, we measured the chemical potential variations of the 2DES versus magnetic field. Applying a voltage to a gate electrode at 0.9 µm distance from the SET island, the edge of the 2DES is shifted closer to the SET island. By this method we map out the electrostatic potential profile of the depletion region of the 2DES. Compressible and incompressible strips are resolved in the quantum Hall regime.
