Structural instability, spinodal decomposition, and rubber-like behavior at different compositions are discussed on the basis of energy surfaces for energy differences between various crystal structures, for mixing energies, for spinodal decomposition, and for electronic densities of states at the Fermi energy. The results show that one can discuss the stability of different phases on the basis of energy differences and mixing energies. Results for the density of states confirm to a certain extent the phenomenological Hume-Rothery rules.
