Analysis of the experimental data on solid state amorphization is= =20 performed to propose a simple model for this phenomenon, based on= =20 the deformation field due to the structural defects of a disordered system. It is shown that in various experimental systems the process= =20 of solid state amorphization can be described in a unified manner as= =20 the relaxation of an initially stressed metastable phase. The autowav= e=20 solutions correspond to a travelling front for the phase transformati= on=20 wave and a travelling pulse for the temperature profile associated wi= th=20 the front. The explosion-like crystallization of an amorphous phase c= an=20 be initiated by an external energy input exceeding a critical value.= =20 The application of the developed model for the processes of the formation=20 of the grain structure of thin films at low substrate temperatures is discussed. The work was financially supported by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, the BMBF-TRANSFORM-Programme, the INCO-Copernicus-Network=20 and an INTAS project.
