Formation of Metal/Polymer Interfaces by Metal Evaporation: Influence of Deposition Parameters and Defects — •Vladimir Zaporojtchenko, Knut Behnke, Thomas Strunskus, and Franz Faupel — Lehrstuhl für Materialverbunde, Technische Fakultät der CAU Kiel, Kaiserstr. 2, 24143 Kiel
The growth of a metal layer on a polymer surface is determined by
the basic processes occurring in the initial stages of
metal/polymer interface formation. The interplay between
adsorption, nucleation, diffusion and cluster growth can be used
to obtain different morphologies in a controlled manner simply by
a variation of the preparation conditions. Metal/polymer
interfaces with different but well defined morphologies were
prepared by evaporating noble metals (Au, Ag, Cu) onto chemically
different polymers, i.e., bisphenol-trimethyl cyclohexane
polycarbonate (TMC-PC), pyromellitic dianhydride-oxydianiline
(PMDA-ODA) polyimide (PI), polystyrol (PS) and Teflon AF 1601. On
some of the polymers the influence of defects, created by ion
bombardment, was investigated. The evolving interfaces were
characterised using transmission electron microscopy (TEM),
x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force
microscopy (AFM).
