Optical extinction by spherical particles in an absorbing medium: a generalization of Mie’s theory and a comparison with an experiment — •A.N. Lebedev1, O. Stenzel1, M. Gartz2, and U. An extension of the Mie theory for absorbing media is presented. The optical extinction of the composite system cluster+absorbing matrix is given as a sum of partial extinction of the particle and the extinction of the reference sample. The method allows the consideration of the matrix of an arbitrary shape. The explicit expressions for the optical extinction and scattering by the spherical particle are derived. The theory is applied to calculate the optical response of separated iron clusters embedded in a Fullerite film. The calculated optical extinction of the system shows a good agreement with the overall features of experimentally obtained spectra. The method is extended to take into account the electromagnetic interaction between aggregated spherical particles in absorbing media.
