We report on configuration interaction in resonant photoemission from La metal. In contrast to La3d94fn photoemission final states, where the 4f1 component appears at the low binding-energy side of the 4f0 emission, a reversed situation is encountered for the La5p states due to a weaker core-hole interaction with the 4f-electron. At the 4d → 4f excitation threshold, the La5p54f0 component reveals a giant resonant enhancement for transitions into 1P1 and only weak intensity variations for excitations into 3P1 and 3D1 intermediate states. The La5p54f1 component reveals an opposite behavior. This is explained by different contributions of spectator and participator processes to the decay of the intermediate states.
