We present total-energy calculations for atoms (H, O and K) and molecules (CO) adsorbed on a Pt25 cluster simulating the local environment of various adsorption sites of the Pt(111) surface. We discuss under what conditions the surface bond gives rise to a strenghtening (weakening) of the in-plane metal bonds leading to compressive (tensile) stress. We also discuss the contribution to surface stress of adsorbate-adsorbate interactions.
