Current-voltage characteristics of a stack of Josephson junctions in an external magnetic field. — •M. V. Fistul, A. V. Ustinov, and P. Müller — Physikalisches Institut III, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erwin-Rommel-Straße 1, D-91058 Erlangen

We have developed a theory of current-voltage characteristics (CVC) of a stack of arbitrary number of Josephson junctions in the presence of an external magnetic field applied parallel to the junction plane. In this system, the linear electromagnetic waves propagate along the junctions planes and display a broad spectrum of wavelengths. In the presence of DC bias the resonance interaction between these waves and Josephson current wave leads to a complicated structure of resonances in the CVC, as has been already observed in experiments. The dependence of CVC on the magnetic field, the strength of coupling between layers and the size of the system has been obtained. The disorder in Josephson current density has been also taken into account. Some of these predictions are checked numerically and good accord with analysis is found. Relevance of our results for the both cases of artificially prepared stacks of Josephson junctions and high-temperature layered superconductors is discussed.
