Metal-insulator transition in the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein model — •Eric Jeckelmann — AG Vielteilchentheorie, Fachbereich Physik, Philipps-Universität Marburg, 35032 Marburg
The effects of quantum lattice fluctuations on the Peierls instability are studied in the one-dimensional Holstein model for spin-1/2 fermions at half-filling. Static correlation functions are calculated in the ground state of long chains (up to 100 sites) using the density matrix renormalization group method. Spectral weight functions and optical conductivity are obtained by exact diagonalizations of small clusters (up to six sites). It is shown that the transition from the metallic phase to the Peierls insulating phase occurs at finite values of the phonon frequency and of the electron-phonon coupling strength.
