We study the properties of the phase of the transmission amplitude through a disordered, interacting system. Specifically, we look at a quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. Recently, this quantity became experimentally accessible [1]. Using the constant interaction model and random matrix theory for the single particle levels of the quantum dot, we calculate the phase dependence on gate voltage for a given disorder configuration. We observe an increase of the phase by π at the Coulomb blockade resonances, and drops by π (”phase lapses”) between the resonances. We identify different mechanisms for these phase lapses. By averaging over the disorder configurations the phase-phase correlation function depending on gate voltage is obtained. We find interaction–induced correlations between the phases at different gate voltages.
